Essex Commissioner Backs Safer Business Action Week 2025 to Combat Retail Crime and Reinforce Community Safety

The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC) for Essex, Roger Hirst, has endorsed the 2025 Safer Business Action (SaBA) Week, launched on 10 November, as part of a broader campaign to confront retail crime and strengthen safety measures for businesses across the county. The initiative forms a key element of ongoing joint efforts between police, local authorities and business networks to curb offences that undermine commercial activity and community wellbeing.

SaBA Week unites law-enforcement agencies, partner organisations and business owners in a coordinated push to reduce crime in high streets, shopping centres and rural commercial areas. The initiative highlights the importance of collective action in addressing persistent challenges such as theft, anti-social behaviour and other offences that erode the sense of security for traders and customers alike.

In expressing his support, Mr Hirst emphasized that secure business environments are fundamental to the prosperity of local communities. When enterprises operate without the constant pressure of crime, they contribute more effectively to economic stability and create a safer atmosphere for employees and residents. He stressed that SaBA Week demonstrates how structured collaboration can produce tangible improvements in crime reduction.

Deputy PFCC Jane Gardner reinforced this message during her recent address at the Essex Chambers of Commerce Festival of Business, where she outlined ongoing work to help businesses strengthen crime-prevention practices. Her remarks underscored the commitment of the PFCC to remain closely engaged with the business community.

Central to this effort is the Essex Business Crime Strategic Board, chaired by the PFCC. The Board acts as a forum for businesses to share concerns, exchange intelligence and influence local strategies aimed at reducing offences affecting commercial sectors. According to Mr Hirst, the Board’s work is already shaping targeted investments in neighbourhood policing and broader prevention initiatives designed to safeguard business operations.

The PFCC highlights that safer commercial districts not only improve public confidence but also stimulate economic growth, encouraging companies to invest and expand. SaBA Week reinforces the essential link between community safety and long-term prosperity. The Commissioner is calling on businesses, partners and residents to engage actively in the week’s activities and support collective efforts to build a more secure and resilient Essex.
